Gerald Peters Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of abstract painter, Tracy Harris, titled Testaments.

Tracy Harris creates a world that sits between abstracted chaos and pictorial control. Her spiraling lines travel through the depths of thick swaths of wax and pigment, whether painted on or scraped away and incised. Harris’s work is multilayered in physicality as well as concept. Passages of line in high-key colors suggest what might be DNA strands, planetary orbits, magnetic fields, or water currents, in an interwoven combination of pattern and texture. Buried images come into focus and subsequently dissolve away, revealing new layers and complexities of the work, exposing figures and motion beneath the surface. Architectural influence translates to the surface in the form of swirling ziggurat shapes that serve as metaphors for the human spirit.  Her repertoire of forms mutates endlessly, suggesting possibilities of generation and transformation. The role of memory in perception is a recurring theme in her work.

Born in Lawton, Oklahoma into a family of architects, Harris grew up in Dallas, Texas and Bangkok, Thailand.  She received her BFA in 1980 and her MFA in 1983, both from the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.  In 1992, Harris relocated to East Hampton, New York where she currently lives and works. She has received two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, and awards from several organizations including the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, Texas, and Guild Hall Museum, East Hampton, New York. She taught Painting, Drawing and Intaglio Printmaking at several colleges and universities while in Texas, and was Associate Museum Educator at the Outreach Program of the Dallas Museum of Art for four years before moving to New York.

Tracy Harris: Testaments is on view at 235 East 59th Street from November 12 through January 8, 2016.  For a price list and further information, please contact Gavin Spanierman, Managing Director, at or (212) 628-9760.
