Henry Baines

Henry Egerton Baines was born in Shrewsbury, England.  His parents were Dr. Egerton Baines and Mary Rice.  He served as a lieutenant in the Royal Artillery in Canada from ca. 1863 until his death in 1866.  Baines published an account of his 1863 yachting holiday on Lake Ontario with fellow officers stationed at Cobourg.  The work was entitled Cruise of the Breeze (no date, no publisher).  While stationed in Quebec, he painted many views of the city in watercolor, such as this set from his scrapbook. 

He died while fighting a fire in Quebec on October 14, 1866.
