German-born and European-trained, Wimar brings a sophisticated style to the frontier of pre-Civil War America. Wimar studied with Emanuel Leutze at the Düssseldorf Academy, who shared both his German-American heritage and an affinity for grand historical painting. Wimar returned to St. Louis in 1856, depicting the people who moved west from the Mississippi, the land they passed through and chose for their new home, and the settlements they created.
