German born, A. Zeno Shindler came to America at an early age and by 1852, was a drawing instructor in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where he exhibited regularly.

In 1870-1871, he accompanied Englishman William Blackmore on a tour of the American West, which inspired him to become a dedicated painter of Indian subjects.
