Press Release

Gerald Peters Gallery is pleased to present the dual exhibitions, TRACY HARRIS and FRANK WIMBERLEY, two selections of fifteen works by these talented American abstract painters. Please join us at the opening reception to meet the artists on Wednesday, September 10th, 6-8 pm.

From their studios on eastern Long Island, both Tracy Harris and Frank Wimberley create evocative paintings that express their individual commitment to artistic process, spontaneity, and improvisation. However, their independent artistic methods, and the works that result, are distinctive.

Harris’s paintings are informed by a variety of elements, including architecture, science, and the modernist tradition in art. Her luminous paintings are embedded with buried images, both abstract and figurative. Fields of translucent color and pattern are built up in multiple layers and calligraphic swirls, selectively scraped away to reveal intricate figures beneath the surface.

Wimberley describes himself as an Abstract Expressionist, an artistic tradition established over sixty years ago in the Long Island studios of Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, and Elaine and William de Kooning. Wimberley applies his paints shade by shade, brushstroke by brushstroke, to create what he has termed a “controlled accident.” Wimberley slowly arrives at a composition of overwhelming color, endless depth, and palpable texture that demands an emotional response from the viewer.
