Artist Lecture: Saturday May 10, 4-5pm

Coined the nation’s preeminent painter of architectural illusionism, Richard Haas will debut an exhibition of prints, paintings, dioramas and a unique installation that reflect the artist’s projects within the state of Texas. Gerald Peters Gallery is honored to host this legendary artist, best known for his monumental trompe l’oeil murals throughout the world. He has completed hundreds of exterior and interior projects, many over 100,000 square feet. Influenced by Bernini, the Asam brothers and Frank Lloyd Wright, Haas’ innovative creations demonstrate a perfect blend of painting, sculpture, architecture and environmental planning.

Since his childhood in Spring Green, Wisconsin, Haas gradually developed an architectural fantasy from his road trip observations of more urban surroundings. The looming edifices of cities like Chicago, St. Louis and Detroit were to be later enhanced by the artist’s mastery of quadratura. This technique first appeared in Italy, most popular during the Renaissance, then expanded into France and Austria and finally all of Western Europe. Haas’ work remarkably combines classical aesthetics with contemporary subject matter as he is often keen to incorporate local symbols and subjects into his site specific creations.

Linking people with both their interior and exterior surroundings is important to Haas. He professes, “Our cities have not been mended and the wounds seem to be growing constantly rather than diminishing.” Already a distinguished painter and printmaker by the 1960s, Haas’ career soared in 1973 with the arrival of his first physical altercations of the cityscape. Society’s depression by years of Modern minimalist design paved the way for the re-introduction of Realism in painting. Haas brilliantly services this desire for beautification by transforming sterile walls and bare factory facades into alluring, illusionistic and sometimes whimsical scenes that breathe character and life back into each individual city, town or neighborhood in which they are painted.

The son of a German immigrant, many of Haas’ early relatives were trained as stone masons. This inherent love for building resulted in him conjuring imaginary cities in his sketchbook as early as eight years old. The idea behind Hass’ light-boxes of the 1960s, depicting private, miniature environments of famous artists and architects eventually captured the essence of urban public spaces. Architectural projects and commissions are seen in Europe, Australia and throughout the United States including Fort Worth, Dallas and Huntsville. Haas’ art is in the permanent collections of the Hudson River Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Modern Museum of Art, NY, the St. Louis Art Museum, Yale University Art Gallery, Walker Art Center, and the National Academy of Design among others.
