Following a tremendously successful year in Europe with sold out shows in Winterthur, Switzerland, Berlin and Dresden, Germany, the Gerald Peters Gallery in Dallas is proud to present a solo exhibition of Arie Van Selm’s newest artwork.

Since Arie Van Selm’s first exhibition with the Gerald Peters Gallery in 2005, the artist continues the advancement of his signature subjects – the female profile and the Tango-Bird – by integrating them together into one motif. The bird profile is often seen as an echo of the female profile, demonstrating an inquisitive gaze. Manipulating these juxtapositions over the past two years has allowed Van Selm to play with a variety of forms, outlines, and brushstrokes while also advancing a representational subject matter and mood.

Van Selm’s Dallas exhibition features the unveiling of his famous Tango-Bird re-introduced
and formulated into a three dimensional sculpture. Striving to combine classical form with a contemporary medium, Van Selm utilizes urethane as the texture for these sculptures. The “touch” of the urethane often creates initial astonishment, followed by a smile. The soft tactile quality of the material counteracts the smooth, clean-cut forms. Tango-Bird evolved from the artist’s earlier series of Zen-Birds which conveyed a sense of inner peace and contemplation. Now the birds command a slightly more assertive focus with extra long toes chiseled in clear four-print formation to emphasize the significance of the step and forward motion.

Another recent motif of flowers, once playing a minor role within his compositions, is now celebrated as a primary subject. Previously observed as ambiguous abstract floral forms floating in Van Selm’s earlier paintings, this subject has re-surfaced in his recent canvases specifically as a bouquet of gladiolas.

A native of Utrecht, Netherlands, Arie Van Selm was first influenced artistically by his grandfather Willem Witsen (1860-1923), a Dutch Impressionist. He was educated in Amsterdam and continued his studies in Europe. Journeys to the south of France, Zihuatanejo, Mexico and Kyoto, Japan particularly impacted his style. His work is found among international collections and he continues to work and exhibit in Dallas, New York, Amsterdam and Berlin.
