In 1922 Harold Weston, after living and painting for two years in a one-room studio in the Adirondacks, rolled up his paintings and took them to the New York gallery that had held the first Van Gogh exhibition in the United States. When the works were exhibited six months later, it was apparent to critics that a bold new talent had arrived.
Although he is considered the pre-eminent modernist painter to work in the Adirondacks, Weston is not widely known today. The long periods he spent out of New York City and the non-art causes with which he was often occupied kept his work out of the public eye. This exhibition seeks to re- establish Weston as an important American modernist.
This exhibition covers all periods of Weston’s career, from the early expressionist landscapes and nudes to the late quasi-abstract paintings derived from minute examination of nature. Catalog available.
