The Gerald Peters Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of works by one of the Southwest’s most eloquent photographers, Craig Varjabedian. Varjabedian’s finely detailed photographs range from the magnificent landscapes of the Southwest to intimate portraits of its people and culture. Prominent photo historian Beaumont Newhall once said of Varjabedian’s work, “The remarkable photographs by Craig Varjabedian are not only beautiful but also extremely valuable documents of architecture, culture, and lifestyle of northern New Mexico. His work is extremely valuable from both artistic and historical viewpoints.” Varjabedian recently released his sixth photographic publication, Craig Varjabedian, Four & Twenty Photographs: Stories from Behind the Lens (University of New Mexico Press, 2007) in which he shares his favorite photographs and the stories behind them. In celebration of this new release, the gallery will host a one-man exhibition, book signing, and reception beginning Friday evening, October 5 from 5 – 7 pm. The artist and the book’s author, Robin Johns, will both be in attendance.

Varjabedian studied photography under Ansel Adams and Paul Caponigro in addition to receiving his BFA from the University of Michigan and his MFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology. His studies under Adams influenced his decision to work predominantly in black-and-white film. Working principally with a large-format 5x7 inch Ebony view camera and vintage 1930 lenses, the artist records and interprets his primary subject---New Mexico-- with great detail, transcendent lighting, and empathy. Varjabedian captures the spirit of place and enduring sense of culture in the Southwest while commenting upon landscape, culture, and how the two influence and imprint each other.

Varjabedian directs the New Mexico Photography Field School in Santa Fe, New Mexico and has received numerous grants and awards for his photography from the National Endowment for the Arts and the McCune Charitable Foundation. His works have been exhibited at The Philbrook Museum of Art, Tulsa; The Albuquerque Museum; and the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center; among other venues. His works are in the permanent collection of the New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe; The Baltimore Museum of Art; The National Hispanic Cultural Center, Albuquerque; and The Albuquerque Museum.

In the early 1990s, he began work on The Morada Photographic Survey, an opportunity to photograph the elusive members of the Penitente brotherhood of Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado, La Fraternidad Piadosa de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno. The project resulted in a book, En Divina Luz: The Penitente Moradas of New Mexico (University of New Mexico Press, 1994), and an Emmy Award-winning PBS documentary of the same title. Other projects by Varjabedian have included By the Grace of Light: Images of Faith from Catholic New Mexico, As the Spirit Stands Still, and an extensive project on Ghost Ranch, also in conjunction with the University of New Mexico Press (forthcoming). Four & Twenty Photographs is Varjabedian’s sixth photographic project to be published and his first one-person exhibition at the Gerald Peters Gallery, Santa Fe.
