With these old, new and mysterious harmonies – of rock and dwelling, path and water – I want to hold and speak to the presence of the UNKNOWN: its light, its sweetness, its color, its mystery, and its ability to nourish and free us.

– Carol Anthony

One of the first things that one notices about Carol Anthony’s work is the skillful and carefully modulated utilization of her materials to create an atmospheric light that evokes a sense of mystery and quiet melancholy combined with a classic, Rembrandt-like glow.

Anthony’s primary media are oil crayon on paper, enamel on gessoed masonite panel, and the monotype. The oil pastels are applied layer after layer - usually at least seven - in cross-hatched strokes that are blended by hand. The enamels are applied to panels that have been laboriously sanded and gessoed.

Her subject matter typically depicts isolated buildings, sparse landscapes, single pieces of fruit (often pears) or eggs that sometimes fill the entire picture space. Anthony’s landscapes often include Piñon trees at different times of the day and in varying light conditions. These works bear comparison to Monet’s haystacks. Her Inner Rooms may seem empty of life but are actually brimming with presence. Tables set out in expectation of communion, and ladders ascending towards the light, are all metaphors for longing and fulfillment. Anthony sets for herself that elusive goal of “making the invisible visible,” and she has said, “I went deep inside to construct a safety net around silence that became my early Inner Room.”

Carol Anthony’s work is represented in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and the Carnegie Institute, among others, as well as numerous major corporate collections. Private collectors who have purchased Carol Anthony’s work include Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon, Jessye Norman, David Rockefeller, Nan Newton and Dave Grusin, Emilio Estevez, Milton Glaser, Claire and Eugene Thaw, Lily Auchincloss, and Graham and Ann Gund.
