Gerald Peters Gallery, Santa Fe, is pleased to present Unique Surfaces, an exhibition bringing together the works of three renowned and award-winning artists: painters John Encinias and Matt Smith, and sculptor Kent Ullberg. In method and subject matter, these artists produce works that are distinct and personal, yet share a fascination with the deepest truths of the natural world.
Denver-based John Encinias is a self-taught artist who started painting at the age of fifteen. Encinias’ paintings are characterized by a subdued and subtle quality, a natural quietness. Encinias, who describes his technique as “impressionistic realism,” prefers painting directly from his subjects, whether still lifes or landscapes. Encinias works to bring his subjects to life at the level of the senses, using paint to convey smell, touch, temperature – even sound. Encinias restricts his palette to warm and cool versions of the primary colors, softer colors which capture the nuances of color of nature, the hues which change with the seasons.
Painter Matt Smith was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1960, but moved three years later to the place that would provide the deepest artistic and emotional attachment: the state of Arizona, where he has spent much of his adult life. Smith paints landscapes uninterrupted by either human or animal life. A plein air painter, Smith uses color and texture in his oil paintings to impart the works with a sense of tangibility, a distinct sense of the sensory experience of a place, whether that place is the Grand Tetons, the redwood forest of California, or Smith’s beloved Sonoran Desert.
A native of Sweden, legendary sculptor Kent Ullberg studied at the Swedish Konstfack School of Art in Stockholm and at museums in Germany, the Netherlands, and France. He has permanently made his home in the United States, where he now lives on Padre Island, Corpus Christi, Texas. Equally renowned in both monumental and smaller scales, Ullberg’s works have been shown all over the world, including at the National Museum of Natural History in Stockholm, Sweden; the Salon d'Automne in Paris, France; the National Gallery in Botswana, Africa; the Exhibition Hall, Beijing, China; the Guildhall in London, U.K.; and the National Geographic Society, Washington, D.C.. A major supporter of wildlife conservation, Ullberg has received honors from numerous art institutions, including the National Academy of Western Art, the National Museum of Wildlife Art, and the National Sculpture Society.
An exhibition catalog will be available for purchase. Additional images of works from the exhibition are available upon request.
